State facing manpower shortage with development push

KUCHING: Sarawak is facing a shortage of manpower, especially in the northern area, where there are numerous on-going and upcoming development projects.  

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said as of April 30, there were a total of 226 projects under various implementing agencies in Limbang division and that 57 projects had been completed.

Meanwhile, 82 projects are under various stages of implementation the remainder are in the planning stage.

“Our economy is good, hence, there are many projects here. In fact, there are too many projects here.

“So, this has led us to other problems such as lack of manpower and building materials, especially cement,” he said after chairing a meeting  on the development progress of Limbang, today (May 27)
“We have actually employed a lot of technicians from Sabah to help us on telco towers as we don’t have enough people here,” he said.

On the cement shortage, he said, the Sarawak government has allowed projects in Northern Sarawak to import cement from other countries.

“As for shortage of manpower, we are currently looking into it and let’s see how we can overcome it,” he said.
