KUCHING: Connectivity is no longer considered a luxury but a basic human right, said Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

The Minister of Utility and Telecommunication emphasised the need to connect individuals in every corner of the world for the betterment of humanity.

“We must at our best endeavour to connect all human beings in every nook and corners of this world for the betterment of humanity,” he said when speaking at the celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2023 at Plaza Merdeka here on Saturday.

Despite the challenges faced in providing telecommunications services, he highlighted the commitment of the ministry, along with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), to work collaboratively with the telecommunications industry.

“We are always committed and will work collaboratively to ensure that the entire telecommunications initiative can be implemented successfully and benefit the people in Sarawak,” he added.

To promote the sustainability of economic activities through the adoption of new technology and innovation, Julaihi noted that the State Legislative Assembly has unanimously approved the Amendments to the Land Code (Amendment) 2022.

These amendments, he said, will regulate and control the usage of spectrum in Sarawak airspace, enabling efficient utilisation of limited resources and creating a significant impact on the digital economy.

“These amendments are aimed at safeguarding the constitutional and legislative powers of the state in the utilisation of resources in Sarawak,” he said.

The WTISD 2023 event was officiated by federal Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
