KUCHING: The government has spent RM1 million on flight ticket subsidy for Sarawakian students studying in institutions of higher learning (IPT) outside the state.

According to Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, as of last month, more than 3,000 out of 4,000 applications for the RM300 subsidy had been approved.

“There are a few issues such as students giving the wrong bank account number which had resulted in the delay in approval, but we will help them and ensure they will get the subsidy,” he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house here yesterday.

Fazzrudin thanked Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Sarawak government for the subsidy initiative which was a huge benefit for the students.

He said Sarawakian students studying in Peninsular Malaysia, Labuan, and Sabah could apply for the flight ticket subsidy at the Sarawak Volunteers Facebook page.

Applications must be completed with documents such as a photocopy of the applicant’s identification card, bank account number and student’s confirmation letter from the respective IPTs.

“The applicants have 60 days after their flight to apply for the subsidy,” he said.

He encouraged those who have yet to apply to take up the opportunity.
