KUCHING: Sarawak will collaborate with Brunei Darussalam on the continuation of the Pan Borneo highway project, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said today.

“We told them that we will continue the project which is connected to our coastal road within northern Sarawak.

“We also briefed them during a recent visit by a Sarawak delegation to Brunei that we would be able to collaborate on the continuation of the project just as in the earlier agreement in 2018. However, the government under Pakatan Harapan cancelled the project,” he said.

Awang Tengah also added that Brunei was briefed on the overall road connectivity in the northern part of the state, which includes the Sarawak Link Road, and the road to the border of Kalimantan, Indonesia.

“With the proposed Northern Coastal Highway project that will be implemented, it is hoped that it will become an easier connecting point for both countries,” he said during a press conference on the upcoming Sarawak Nuzul Al-Quran here today.

In the meantime, Awang Tengah also assured Sarawak’s ability to provide electrical supply to Brunei if it requires power.

“This is to fulfil the commitment under the Paris Agreement where every country must use at least 10 per cent of renewable energy by 2025.

“That being said, if Brunei ever needs our help, we will assist them, one way or the other. If they do not need it, then that is okay,” he added.

On the recent visit, Awang Tengah said Sarawak had several discussions with Brunei on other related issues.

“This includes the suggestion to develop an airport in Lawas,” he added.
