KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KWPK) held a two-day technical meeting with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Malaysia to promote the rights and wellbeing of children in Sarawak.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry is happy to collaborate with UNICEF to help in advocating the rights of children, which is also the focal point of the ministry.

“We want to give priority to our children’s wellbeing, therefore, both parties will discuss how to proceed with the collaboration this year and implement it by next year,” she said when met by reporters after a courtesy call from UNICEF at the Baitulmakmur building here today.

Earlier, Fatimah said UNICEF had briefed the ministry on its work in Malaysia and how the ministry and UNICEF can further strengthen their partnership in some focus areas.

“One of the areas of focus is on the measurement of child poverty, child development and the implementation of an integrated policy response (cash plus) in Sarawak, whilst strengthening indigenous pre-school curriculum, through the integration of global citizenship education (GCED) and project-based learning (PBL).

“Child poverty is not only about money but there are many other indicators under it. Hence, we want to learn more about the issue at hand through our collaboration with UNICEF.

“When we have collected all the data, we would be able to determine our children’s position in this state, at the same time improve the services that our children need, be it under education or health,” she added.
