KUCHING: The Dayak community is reminded to stay safe at home and not to hold open house or go out visiting during Gawai festival on June 1 in order to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women chief Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie said ‘anang kin kiti, diau jenuh di rumah’ (don’t move around, just stay put at home) and celebrate the festivity with those within the household whilst keeping in-touch with families that are far via telephones or keeping them in prayers.

“Gawai is just a day away. Although Gawai will be celebrated differently this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the true meaning of Gawai is and will still be felt,” she said in her Gawai message today.

She said thanksgiving would have a greater meaning if people count their blessings despite the fact that they had to stay far from some loved ones.

“We should be consoled by the fact that we are all safe at home,” she stressed.

She said the longhouse folks must also refrain from allowing visitors or family members from elsewhere to their longhouse.

“Merry makings must be limited to within your own ‘bilik’ (rooms),” she reminded.

Doris took the opportunity to wish all Dayak community Selamat Hari Gawai, ‘Ngajih ka kitai gerai nyamai lalu Gayu Guru’.
