LAWAS: Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) today ended its five-day working visit to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Merapok and Lawas Lumber Wood Processing Sdn Bhd.

The delegation comprised STIDC staff led by its corporate affairs section manager Sharifah Noralah Wan Ahmad and members of media.

They were briefed by STIDC Merapok enforcement officer Siti Suriani on the corporation’s role in the handling of logs and removal of timber products at the ICQS Complex.

According to her, the Free on Board (FOB) exports of timber products recorded by the ICQS Complex in 2018 amounted to RM29.4 mln compared to RM20.8 mln in 2017.

Meanwhile, the FOB imports in 2018 were valued at RM2 mln compared to RM2.9 mln the previous year.

Siti pointed out one of the roles of the ICQS Complex was to issue permits for the transfer of timber products within one working day after inspection to its clients.

She said the control centre operated in two shifts from 6am to 2pm and 2pm to 10pm.

Siti added the validity period of the permits, if the products were from Miri and heading to Sabah, would be three days.

“Products from Limbang heading to Sabah will be issued with a two-day validity period while products from Lawas to Sabah will be granted a one-day validity period permit,” she said.

The delegation then proceeded to visit Lawas Lumber Wood Processing Sdn Bhd. There, the visitors were welcomed by its director Ling Chung Hu and shown around its plywood and sawn timber factory.

Lawas Lumber is one of the many plywood factories in Lawas.
