SIMANGGANG: Two students in the Sri Aman parliamentary constituency who will be furthering their studies at public higher learning institutions this year received donations from the Pencil Project Welfare Association on Sunday.

Association president Norina Umoi Utot said the students Effa Nur Sharmilla Yazid will continue her studies at Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Rajang Campus (English Studies), and Yap Siao Tong who is studying at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).

“The two students, from Rumah Pulang, Lalau and Kampung Ensebang Kuari respectively, are assisted to ease the financial burden of their families.

“The donation is an ongoing programme of the association to help students who get offers to further their studies at higher learning institutions.

“It aims to encourage students to further their studies and at the same time, reduce the burden of families who inevitably need high expenses to register their children at these higher institutions,” she told reporters at the event.

Norina said the association, which was established in 2016, was to raise the status of education for children and residents in the interior as well as easing the burden of low- and middle-income families.

Additionally, the Pencil Project Welfare Association has also provided stationeries to more than 1,000 primary school pupils, especially those sitting for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.

Norina hoped the programme would be able to assist in developing the education of children in rural areas to produce a generation of future leaders.
