SIBU: Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced a significant allocation for the town’s development.

The Premier said that while he is unable to disclose the exact amount at this stage due to ongoing planning, he assured that a substantial investment has been earmarked for Sibu.

“I promise you; I’m committed to ensuring that Sibu is transformed like an Amsterdam in the Netherlands. If Amsterdam is below sea level, Sibu is below the river.

“Therefore, we have to manage this geological structure of Sibu. We need to engage experts. That’s why I say it will take at least 10 years to accomplish this,” he said.

The Premier was speaking at the Sibu United Chinese Association (UCA) Chinese New Year gathering, attended by the Head of State Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at Kingwood Hotel yesterday (Feb 13).

Abang Johari outlined the Sarawak government’s vision to restructure and modernise Sibu into a smart city, a transformation expected to unfold over the next decade.
