KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has made available additional supply sources via the 11kV overhead lines to connect Spaoh from Tanu and Debak lines to address electricity supply problems in Spaoh, Debak and Pusa.

According to a statement from the Utilities Ministry today, the electricity source to Spaoh was transferred to these lines on February 16 to enhance the reliability of supply.

“However, due to maintenance work at Tanu substation in early May, electricity supply had to be temporarily transferred to Engkilili substation.

“Spaoh’s electricity line will be re-supplied from Tanu substation, which will complete its maintenance after the festive season this June,” the statement said.

It added, as a long-term solution, SEB is building a 275kV Serudit substation which is expected to operate in the second quarter of 2020.

“The electricity source to Spaoh and the surrounding areas will be supplied directly from the 275kV Serudit substation once it is completed.

“The overhead lines to Spaoh will be reduced to about 10km and the reliability of the 33kV electricity supply system at Betong, Spaoh and Pusa can be upgraded to a higher level,” the statement said.

Recently, news of the frequent electric disturbances in Spaoh and its surrounding areas has been highlighted in the newspapers.

According to the statement, the on-going Pan Borneo Highway works are contributing to an increase in supply interruptions in Spaoh. The long lines are already susceptible to external disturbances such as adverse weather conditions, animal intrusion and other technical challenges.

Spaoh is located at the end of 75km-long overhead lines, and was formerly only supplied from Engklili 33kV substation causing the town to be especially vulnerable to interruptions at any point along the stretch of lines.
