KUCHING: The 21st Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Supreme Committee will meet at the end of this month to discuss ongoing issues, said Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said the meeting, likely to take place on April 30, will be chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and attended by Sarawak state sports executive committee members.
“Currently, preparation for the upcoming SUKMA is progressing smoothly.
“Meetings like these are always conducted to present any issues that need to be addressed because state sports exco members will be attending this meeting,” he said.
He said these when met by reporters during the Aidilfitri open house organised by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife Puan Sri Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today (Apr 10).
Abdul Karim added that information about budget and allocations will also be conveyed to the state from the SUKMA Supreme Committee.
“While we did not request a specific amount, various costs related to organisation and repairs were presented for consideration.
“By presenting these, we hope the committee can allocate sufficiently to facilitate smooth operations.
“However, regardless of the amount, the games have to continue,” he said.
Additionally, he advised caution to athletes training for SUKMA, urging them to prioritise safety to prevent injuries.
This advice follows a recent incident involving a female cyclist sustaining injuries during training, resulting in a fractured collarbone and abrasions on the cheeks.
“My advice to athletes training at this time, before approaching SUKMA, is to be cautious as we don’t want our athletes to face injuries,” he said.
When asked about Sarawak’s goals for SUKMA, Abdul Karim remains tight-lipped about the state’s target.
“Normally, we do not disclose such matters to the public. We handle them discreetly,” he added.
