LOCAL horror flick ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ has received international recognition by winning several awards at the recent Florence Film Awards in Italy and also a trophy at the Paris Film Awards in France.

The Jason Chong-directed movie won at the Florence Film Awards in May in the categories of Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music Score and Best Producer.

“It has been our intention to bring ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’, which features the unique culture and customs of  the Melanau people in Sarawak, to the global stage, and we have submitted it to seven international film festivals.

“Thankfully, our efforts have been successful as ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ managed to win five trophies at the Florence Film Awards in Tuscany, Italy and one more at the Paris Film Awards,” co-producer Datin Wendy Wong said in a recent statement.

The movie is co-produced by Wong together with Datuk Nancie Foo under their company, Produksi Seni 2020 Sdn Bhd.

“The other award was for Best Feature Film at the Paris Film Awards, which took place in March,” said Wong.

‘Sumpahan Jerunei’, which stars Bront Palarae, Uqasha Senrose, Daiyan Trisha and Tony Eusoff, among others, was also screened at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival in the US in May and at the Busan Film Festival in South Korea.

“More encouraging was the fact that ‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ was screened as the opening movie for the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2023 in Kuching, Sarawak, recently,” she said.

‘Sumpahan Jerunei’ began screening in cinemas nationwide on July 27.
