BINTULU: The Sarawak government is committed to survey native customary lands in the effort to ensure that owners of Native Customary Rights (NCR) lands are given titles.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that since the implementation of surveying initiative by the state government, almost 1.2 million hectares of NCR lands have been surveyed with more than 870,000 hectares gazetted.

“The Sarawak government has always recognised the land that belongs to the people, and we have also amended the Land Code related to ‘pemakai menoa’ and ‘pulau galau’ in order to safeguard the rights of the people.

“We will continue this effort based on requests from the people and recognise native customary rights (NCR) up to the level of individual ownership subject to the lawful and actual ownership,” he said during a  Sembang Santai Bersama Pemimpin programme at Rumah Fabian Jembu, Sungai Setiam here on Tuesday (Oct 31).

Commenting on the Jepak by-election, Awang Tengah said that the people’s support for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) needed to be translated into votes for the coalition during polling day on Nov 4.

“Through the series of visits and programmes that have been held, we found that the people gave strong support to GPS.

“We hope that this support can be translated into votes on the polling day to ensure a big victory for our candidate,” he said.

He stated that the party’s campaigns and programmes would continue and be further improved in the remaining few days before polling.
