KUCHING: Swiftlet nest operators must possess a valid license and adhere to the established breeding regulations.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh clarified that the Sarawak Forestry Department (SFC) would only take action if any misconduct was identified.
“Swallow farm operators who possess permits but fail to comply with the guidelines outlined in the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 are considered to be in violation of the law,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of permits and guidelines for individuals involved in the industry, he added, “We are determined to prevent irresponsible operators from polluting the bird’s nest industry.”
The statement by the Deputy Minister came in response to recent allegations accusing the SFC of engaging in illegal enforcement activities regarding swiftlet nests.
Currently, there are 491 license holders authorised to engage in swiftlet nest cultivation, while 800 individuals are operating without a permit.
In light of this, Len urged those without a license to apply for one in order to comply with the existing regulations. “Birds can carry viruses, which could pose a health risk to the local community,” he cautioned.
