KUCHING: Two students who have graduated from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Stephanie Wong Chiew Dee and Daniel Hadi Wong Mohd Hariz, are charting their paths to success in their respective fields.

Valedictorian Stephanie, 23, exudes a blend of cultural richness and artistic prowess, thanks to her interest in multimedia design.

Hailing from Sabah with a mixed Filipino-Chinese heritage, she shared her approach to balancing study and social life, emphasising the importance of setting priorities.

“What I prioritise is my grades and my studies,” Stephanie asserts.

Currently a freelance designer, she has already left her mark on notable projects, including collaborations with the Borneo Cultural Museum with her latest endeavour involving breathing life into the narratives of traditional art forms through animation and illustration.

“In the previous year, I collaborated on a project with the Borneo Cultural Museum, which included animating Pua Kumbu and developing an interactive experience for the said traditional endeavour.

“Currently, I am also working on completing a project for a museum in Melaka. The project involves animation and illustration with two other friends of mine,” she said.

Meanwhile Daniel, a 23-year-old mechanical engineering student, embodies the essence of determination and scholarly zeal.

When asked about his motivation as a student, he expressed a profound love for learning, citing the inspiring guidance of his lecturers as a driving force behind his academic pursuits.

“I’m motivated simply because I’m passionate about learning. In the field I’m studying, there are numerous lecturers who excel at teaching, and their dedication inspires me to work hard. Without their guidance, I fear I might not remain as committed to my field of study.

“In my chosen field, the primary challenge arises when collaborating on group projects. Occasionally, we find ourselves in less active groups, requiring me to step up as a leader to ensure our projects are completed on time and error-free,” he added.

He emphasised that individuals interested in the engineering field should persist in learning, particularly from others, and develop the ability to self-educate on topics.

Additionally, he underscored the importance of finding motivation to learn, emphasising the necessity for students to grasp the material being taught rather than merely listening to it.

He intends to persist in exploring the field further, with a specific focus on aspects such as building design and engineering consultancy.

Wednesday’s ceremony at at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) witnessed the graduation of 309 students for the academic session of 2023.
