MARUDI: The state-level “Jaku Iban dan Pengelandik Jari” Symposium is scheduled to be held at the Imperial Hotel, Miri, from Aug 2 to 3.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Dr. Penguang Manggil, said that the programme serves as a platform for discussing issues related to the Iban language through forums.

“In addition, it will also advocate for and promote the use of the Iban language by addressing related topics and showcasing the uniqueness, arts, and culture of the Iban community.

“It also encourages the growth of archival materials and the digitalisation of the Iban language, as well as the development of Iban handicraft production,” he told a press conference recently.

Penguang, who is also the Marudi assemblyman, said that various programmes and activities would be organised, including seminars, exhibitions, performances, and handicraft-making competitions.

“Among the handicrafts to be produced are ‘nusuk marik-tangu’ or ‘marik empang,’ woven mats, karap cloth, terabai carvings, and ‘sugu tinggi’,” he added.
