THE Sarawak government should seriously consider taking back the autonomy over education to enable the state and its people to truly enjoy the best that education could offer.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh (PSB-Bawang Assan) said in the meantime it was imperative that the state government demands the Federal government to develop and upgrade educational facilities in line with Sarawak rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He pointed out that there was an urgent need for new construction and upgrading of schools and teachers’ quarters as well as increasing the number of local teachers.

“Education in every sense is one of the fundamental factors of development and raises people’s productivity and creativity as well as promotes entrepreneurship and technological advances.

“In addition, it plays a very crucial role in securing economic and social progress and improving income distribution.”

Wong said this when debating on the motion of appreciation to the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s address at the DUN Sitting today.
