KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak is still in discussion with the Ministry of Education (MOE) on ways to overcome the issue of shortage of teachers in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg admitted that Sarawak is currently short of 3,000 teachers in the state.

“That is why now we are discussing with the MOE to establish the teachers institute here and for universities in Sarawak to give teachers training,” he said.

He said during the town hall session in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2023 programme held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on yesterday (Oct 21).

Adding on, he said that not only would this method help in overcoming issues such as shortage of teachers here, it would also give emphasis on Sarawakians to teach at schools in the state.

“Having said that, we are planning for Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus to give courses that train teachers which are recognised by Malaysian Education (Ministry).

“That is why we are working together with MOE to train our teachers and place them here to make do with the shortage,” he said.
