SIBU: Tanjung Manis Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 in Sungai Sadit is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2023.

According to the Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi, the completion of the water treatment plant will resolve water supply issues in Tanjung Manis and the surrounding areas of Belawai, Jerijeh, Rejang, Pulau Bruit and Serdang.

“With the completion of the Tanjung Manis Water Treatment Plant, we now have two water sources. Currently, the Bayong Water Treatment Plant is the only source of our water supply.

“We will therefore have two sources of water supply when it operates later, which will also benefit areas in Pulau Bruit, Belawai, and all surrounding areas,” he said when met by a reporter during his work visit to the Tanjung Manis Water Treatment Plant here today (Feb 4).

Elaborating, Julaihi noted that Sibu Water Board (SWB) is currently carrying out restoration works to the existing facilities, which include pipelines, booster stations, and a water treatment plant, as well as the testing and commissioning of the Tanjung Manis Water Supply.

“We are currently inspecting all the pipes and the restoration work, and we will try to operate as fast as we can, but our target is the third quarter of 2023.

“Everything is here and ready; everything only needs to be put in place, in order, and made absolutely perfect before we can supply water,” he pointed out.

The project had been awarded to Hock Seng Lee Bhd at a contract price of RM16.8 million through an open tender.

The construction work initially commenced on July 1, 2020, and is expected to be finished on June 30, 2021.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and manpower shortages arising from the pandemic, the construction progress of the new 20 million litres per day (MLD) direct river water intake was adversely affected, resulting in delays.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
