KUCHING: Telecommunication service providers will be brought to Kampung Sagah to increase network accessibility to the village.

Caretaker Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that the improved internet accessibility in the area will allow education programmes proposed for Kampung Sagah by UNIMAS to be held online.

He said such a programme could be jointly organised to have classes as well as talks to invoke local’s interest in the university

“Organising such classes is one way to interact with them. It may not be held physically, so we can do online classes with them given that the internet accessibility is there.

“If there is no connectivity, we will look at how we can bring other telecommunication companies or state agencies to find a way to speed up the Wi-Fi network here so that we can teach online,” he said.

He said this while inaugurating the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Prihatin, Kesejahteraan Komuniti UNIMAS (KRIS UNIMAS) programme at the Kampung Sagah multipurpose hall, here today (Oct 22).

Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya incumbent MP, described education as very important for Sarawakians to undertake the state government’s aspiration to be an advanced and high-income state by 2030.

He added that the youths need to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to seize all the opportunities given by the state government.

“Our role as parents and community leaders is to focus on our children’s education.

“Get to know the state government’s plans on what courses or programmes they should take so that when they leave the university, they know the job and business opportunities provided by the government,” he said.

Commenting on the KRIS UNIMAS programme, Fadillah said the platform provides knowledge and the services as well as creating awareness for villagers on healthcare-related matters.

In addition, it also eases the health screening process for villagers without having to go to the city, he said.

Also present were UNIMAS Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Leadership and Development) Prof Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman, UNIMAS Teaching Hospital and Medical Centre director Associate Prof Dr Ehfa Bujang Safawi and Padawan Sub-District Officer Julius Scott Sapong representing the Kuching District Office.
