KUCHING: Utilities and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi has urged telecommunication service providers to invest in providing internet services in the rural areas without any hesitation.

He disclosed that he had recently held a special meeting with the service providers (Celcom, DiGi, Maxis, and Umobile) on ways to counter the issues and problems in providing internet coverage throughout Sarawak.

“With multiple telecommunication towers built in the area and more in the future, they should not be worried about investing in providing internet coverage there.

“Now that they are focusing on providing internet coverage in the urban areas, why not provide internet in the rural areas as well?

“I believe that by providing internet coverage in the rural areas, it will benefit both parties (service providers and users),” he said.

He said this when representing Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan in officiating at the opening of an Al-Quran Seminar in conjunction with 61st Sarawak State Level Al-Quran Recitation Ceremony at Sarawak Islamic Complex MAJMA Hall.

Julaihi said the government had set aside a huge allocation to see to the provision of internet coverage in the State by 2025,

“With our fast pace development, there are many things that need to be worked on. That is why it is crucial for the government agencies, service providers and federal government agencies to join forces to accelerate the efforts in providing internet coverage throughout Sarawak.

“My ministry will do our best in executing our task in providing internet coverage and clean water supply throughout Sarawak,” he added.
