KAPIT: The local people have been urged to think seriously about the next state election as it will have a direct bearing on the formation of the next state government.

And while they are at it they better stick with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), said Bukit Goram assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Speaking at an annual Chinese New Year (CNY) dinner held by Kapit Chiang Chuan Association at the town’s civic centre last Tuesday evening, Jamit said they ought to support Sarawak-based parties instead of others from outside.

He wanted Sarawak to be ruled by Sarawakians, so he agreed with GPS’ slogan, “Sarawak First”.

“It is better that we rule ourselves. Our objective is Politics of Development. We are concerned about Sarawak rights and interests,” he said.

The Chinese New Year gathering was also an occasion for presenting “angpows” to senior citizens in appreciation for their dedication and commitment to their organisation.

Jamit also advised the people to be united for the development of Kapit.

“I am confident that Kapit will develop and prosper if you cooperate with one another. Kapit is a small community. We can’t afford to be disunited. Unity is our greatest strength,” he said, after which he announced a government grant of RM6,000 for the association and RM1,000 for its grand lucky draws.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of angpows to 134 senior citizens who were sixty years old and above.

The association’s senior officials present at the dinner were the organising chairman Andy Teo Tian Chai, its chairperson Sng Geok Yien, youth chief Gary Ngo, Women’s chief Lily Sng Choon Li, and the advisers Yeo Kim Teck and Ma Tian Kock.

Also present were Special Branch Officer ASP Chua Su Hua, Councillor Jenny Yii, Councillor David Wong Hau Ching, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook, Penghulu Shia Shui Poh, Penghulu Wong Kie Ing, Kapitan Yiap Yii Hoo, Kapitan Yap Hui Li, Red Crescent Society chairman Dr Sia Tih Kong, Chinese Chamber of Commerce chairman Ling Hang Pin, Kwang Tung Association chairman Kong Sien Hua, Kapit Foochow Association chairman Sii Bang Ee, Kapit Music Society chairperson, Chua Bee Hung.
