Three months’ jail for drug possession

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a 25-year-old man to three months’ jail for possessing 0.04g of methamphetamine in early last month.

The accused Fateeq , from Matang Jaya pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar to a charge framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

According to the charge, he possessed the prohibited substance in front of a house in Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar, Petra Jaya around 10.30 am on Jan 5.

The accused was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

If convicted, an accused can be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced to jail for up to five years or both.

According to the facts of the case, a police team from Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) conducted a raid in front of a house in the village on Jan 5.

As a result, they managed to arrest a local man who handed over a plastic packet containing crystalline substance believed to be syabu.

The seized drugs were then taken to the Malaysian Chemistry Department and results confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine weighing 0.04g.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang requested that the court impose a commensurate punishment on the accused.
