Three years in prison, caning for methamphetamine possession

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to three years in prison and three strokes of the rotan by the Magistrates’ Court here on Monday (Feb 6) for possessing 10.58g of methamphetamine.

Bong Tze Chiang, 46, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952 read together with Section 39A(1) of the same Act and Section 34 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar ordered the accused to serve the sentence effective from the date of arrest, Dec 6, 2022.

Bong was accused of possessing the drugs at a house in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, at about 1.30pm, Nov 29, 2022.

Meanwhile, in the same court, he and another person – Sim Hoon Chen, 39, also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15 (1)(a) ADB 1952 for involvement in amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse.

They were accused of committing the offence when they were arrested at the Kuching IPD Narcotics Crime Investigation Division office at about 3.15pm, Nov 29, 2022.

Bong was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment starting from the date of arrest while Sim was fined RM1,000, in default one month’s imprisonment.

Magistrate Zaiton ordered the duo to be under police supervision for two years after serving their sentences.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang. Sim was represented by lawyer Ng Ah Lek while Bong was unrepresented.
