KUCHING: Caretaker Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the decision to not seek re-election in this 15th general election (GE15) was his own accord and without anyone else’s persuasion.

“I have decided to step down based on my own decision, I am currently at my peak of performance and I feel that it is the right time to step down.

“It is a good time for me to step down and I wanted to pull-out from contesting in the coming general election,” he said.

He said this in a press conference at the Kuching International Airport yesterday.

This GE15 will see caretaker Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri contesting in the Santubong seat – which was held by Wan Junaidi since 2004. Nancy has been the Batang Sadong MP since 2008.

Wan Junaidi also said Nancy was a suitable candidate to stand in the Santubong parliamentary seat.

“She was born and bred in Santubong and I feel that she is the suitable candidate to do so.

“Due to the change of times as well, we are also making way for more women to stand and be involved in politics,” he pointed out.

He added that he would give his fullest support to Nancy and most importantly also to ensure Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) wins big.

“You have seen Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Hipni and Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Adenan standing together with Nancy Shukri, supporting her side by side.

“And I will do the same, to support her (Nancy Shukri) in the coming 15th general election,” he said.
