SIBU: The state Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) received a boost in the form of two outboard engine boats from Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said the boats are for flood rescue operations statewide.

“Initially, we planned to provide five boats to PDRM. However, due to unforseen circumstances, we can only deliver two this time around, with the remaining three to be provided later,” he said in his speech at the presentation ceremony held at the IPD Sibu headquarters today.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu Member of Parliament, later announced an allocation of RM105,000 for the  installation of 50 solar lights within the IPD Sibu headquarters compound.

Meanwhile, he took the opportunity to thank PDRM for ensuring the safety of the Sibu community.

“People can now live in peace and harmony, all thanks to the Sibu police for their security measures. The situation in Sibu has improved compared to before, with a greater emphasis on safety.

“Therefore, I appeal to the police to continue their commendable work in ensuring public safety here,” he added.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said they will distribute the boats to district police headquarters (IPDs) which are in need of the boats.

“The boats will be registered as capital assets and become government property. PDRM will make use of these assets during the northeast monsoon season to enable us to carry out operations effectively,” he said.

Mohd Azman stressed that police are enthusiastic about serving the community effectively and ensuring domestic security.

“Therefore, what I emphasise the most is integrity; officers and members utilising the boats must handle these assets responsibly and properly.

“I hope all parties, including district police chiefs and station police chiefs will consistently adhere to the procedures and protocols for usage, maintenance, and safety so that the assets are well-taken care,” he added.

Also present was Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.
