BETONG: A two-year-old boy died at Betong Hospital yesterday (June 6) and doctors believe it was the result of abuse.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail who confirmed the case, said the child’s mother and boyfriend are now detained to facilitate investigation.
“I cannot provide further information other than to confirm that a report was lodged by Betong Hospital about the death of the toddler who had bruises on his body,” he told New Sarawak Tribune via Whatsapp last night.
Meanwhile, Betong police chief DSP Zamry Alli when contacted, said police received a call from the hospital at 3.45pm on the death of the toddler.
A police team which was despatched to the hospital confirmed the incident. The child was brought to the hospital at 3pm by family members for treatment.
“The medical officer’s examination noticed bruises and injuries on the child’s body which could be the cause of death.
“We arrested four of the child’s family members, including the mother,” said Zamry.
He said the suspects, aged between 22 and 65, will be remanded to facilitate investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death sentence upon conviction.
Zamry advised the public not to speculate on the case, appealing to them to allow police to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the culprits.
