MIRI: Traditional media still matter as they are seen as the most trustworthy sources of news despite the proliferation of social media in today’s digital era, said  Minister for Transport  Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

“Despite a conspicuous shift in the media industry caused by today’s digital era with the emergence of portal news, people are still consuming news that is reported and produced by traditional media,” he pointed out.

Lee believed traditional media would remain relevant in years to come.

He was speaking at the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association dinner cum installation night for its new office bearers on Wednesday at a leading hotel here.

“While the value of new media is undeniable, the benefits of traditional media should not be overlooked.  Traditional media remain a trusted source for information. When it comes to the news, there is no substitute for a factual, balanced story,” he emphasised.

Lee, who is also the chairman of the Management Board of Curtin Univerisity of Technology Sarawak Campus, also announced a collaboration between the university and NSJA to conduct an online  journalism course for its members soon to  enhance  and strengthen the skills and knowledge of local journalists.
