As Sarawak celebrates its 60th independence anniversary today (July 22), the Sarawak Patriot Association (SPA) extends warm wishes to all Sarawakians on this momentous occasion.

Sarawak Day holds great significance, serving as a reminder of the historical journey towards self-determination and the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Chairman of the SPA, Datuk Lau Pang Heng, highlighted the importance of fulfilling the promises made in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), particularly regarding oil and revenue as well as the restoration of territorial waters.

He emphasised that the Petroleum Development Act 1975 does not apply to Sarawak and urged the return of what is rightfully due to the state.

“Looking towards the future, the SPA expressed hopes for improved public transportation in major cities and towns, aligning Sarawak’s development with that of West Malaysia. The association called for equal opportunities in higher education, based on academic merits rather than quotas, to promote unity and a sense of Malaysian identity.

Addressing the wellbeing of the elderly, the SPA urged the authorities to provide free medical care for those above 70 years old and consider granting allowances to elderly Sarawakians.

Additionally, they emphasised the importance of peace, safety, security, integrity, and the eradication of corruption to achieve full development for Sarawak.

President of Pertubuhan Pembangunan Insan Sarawak (PPIS), Manjeet Sidhu, echoed these sentiments while expressing additional aspirations for Sarawak Day.

She wished for better access to quality education for all children, improved healthcare facilities, and a community that embraces gender equality, particularly empowering single mothers.

“Moreover, fostering unity and solidarity among Sarawakians was highlighted as a fundamental pillar for a brighter future.

“Sarawak Day provides an opportunity for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the state government, and the community to collaborate and work towards transforming these aspirations into reality,” she said.

“By investing in education, healthcare, and initiatives promoting inclusivity and social cohesion, Sarawak can build a prosperous and harmonious future for all its citizens,” she added
