BINTULU: It is important youths are aware of the significance of two dates – July 22 and September 16 – in the state’s and nation’s history.

Assemblyman Tamin Christopher Gira Sambang who stated this emphasised that Sarawak is not a Malaysian state.

He said Sarawak is a region whose status is not the same as other states in the peninsula such as Malacca and Perlis.

“It is important for us to commemorate important dates such as July 22, 1963 when Sarawak became independent and on September 16 when we together with the Malay federated states, Singapore and Sabah established Malaysia,” he said at the closing of the Selangau Carnival last night.

“The history of the establishment of Malaysia and the 18 points in MA63 should be taught and included in the education syllabus of our children at school,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of the Sibu Rural District Council, Petrus Ngelai said that three main events are held every year, namely the Batang Rajang Symphony, the Durin Festival and the Selangau Festival.
