BINTULU: Narcotics police arrested two foreigners, including a woman, for allegedly possession of syabu drugs around Pasar Lama Bintulu, here yesterday (Jan 29).
Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the suspects, aged 30 and 38, were detained for inspection at a budget hotel as they were suspected to be involved in drug abuse and distribution activities.
“Both of them will be investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after seven straw tubes and a plastic packet containing 14.92g of syabu, were confiscated from them.
“If convicted, they can be sentenced to prison for a term of up to five years and up to three lashes of the cane,” he said.
Preliminary investigations found that the seized drugs, intended for distribution around town, can cater to at least 30 users.
The suspects, who tested positive for drugs, will be investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 as well as Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having any valid travel documents.
Nixon said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to address drug abuse issues and to curb criminal activities in the district.
