MIRI: Two local men were arrested for alleged unlicensed moneylending (Ah Long) activities in the district during an operation codenamed ‘Ops Vulture’.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspects were detained by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) around 11 am last Tuesday (Mar 19).

“They were arrested on suspicion of being responsible for meeting borrowers to collect loan repayments.

“Both suspects, aged between 30 and 40, have been remanded for two days to help in investigations,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951/2011, which stipulates a fine of up to RM1 million or imprisonment for a maximum of five years, or both, upon conviction.

Alexson advised the public to exercise caution when engaging in money lending transactions, particularly with unfamiliar parties or individuals.

He urged the public to verify the legitimacy of such transactions with local authorities and financial institutions.
