UNIMAS addresses shortage of Iban language teachers

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is now planning to offer the Bachelor of Education in Iban language programme.

Its vice chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the programme to be offered at its Education, Language and Communication Faculty is to address the current shortage of Iban Language teachers in the state.

“We hope to begin this programme in Semester 1, 2025/2026. Besides this, this faculty also plans to set up the Jabatan Bahasa- Bahasa Borneo which will include the Bahasa Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau and Sarawak Malay dialect,” he said.

He said this during his visit to Deputy Premier cum UNIMAS pro chancellor Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah at his office here today.

Adding on, he stated that UNIMAS would also add in another Bahasa Iban programme which is Bahasa Iban for Communication Profession as an elective course that would be offered to all students during the first semester 2024/2025.

Also present during the visit were UNIMAS Board of Director chairman Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Sulong Matjeraie; UNIMAS deputy vice chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Dr Al- Khalid Othman; Dean Faculty Education, Language and Communication Prof Dr Ambigapathy Pandan; Bahasa Iban, Faculty Education, Language and Communication lecturer Dr Remmy Gedat; and Faculty Education, Language and Communication lecturer Dr Santrol Abdullah.
