All are welcome to the FLC open day.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is gearing up to host its annual open day on May 17 and 18.

This event aims to showcase FLC’s academic programmes, research opportunities, and activities.

The coordinator of the English for Global Communication Programme (EGC) Dr Joseph Ramanair emphasised the importance of the open day for prospective students who are interested in the EGC.

“It’s a good time for them to come and see the faculty and what FLC offers to them,” he said in a statement.

He added that, as a public institution of higher learning, it is their obligation to inform the public about their activities and contributions to the community.

Meanwhile, the coordinator of the Strategic Communication Programme Khadijah Mohamad Tuah highlighted the significance of language proficiency in the field of strategic communication, which includes journalism, broadcasting, advertising, public relations, and more.

She said that students in Strategic Communication need to be proficient in languages, especially English and Bahasa Melayu.

The Linguistics Programme, the first child of FLC, focuses on the scientific study of language and cultural influence on it, integrating language and modern technology.

According to a language lecturer Kazimah Kadai, four foreign languages — Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, and French — will be exhibited alongside the three FLC programmes at the open day.

Visitors will have the opportunity to attend mini-workshops and learn simple greetings, pronunciations, and traditional activities related to these languages.

The FLC open day provides an excellent opportunity for prospective students and the public to discover the FLC’s academic programmes, research opportunities, and community contributions.

As Dr Joseph puts it, “UNIMAS has been established for over three decades. As a community-driven university, we should be part of the community and built for the community.”

Come join the FLC open day this May 17 and 18. This is an opportunity for you and your family to discover the world of language and communication together.
