KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is committed and determined to help the Sarawak government develop the state.

The 60th anniversary of Sarawak Merdeka at UNIMAS was celebrated enthusiastically today, with residents donning national and ethnic attire.

The ceremony was attended by the university’s chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, UNIMAS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Kadim Suaidi and other UNIMAS managerial officers.

Approximately 300 staff and students witnessed a lively ceremony at UNIMAS lake Amphitheatre, where the university management group stood at the centre with UNIMAS kayak athletes.

Mohd Kadim stated that UNIMAS actively supported Sarawak’s 60 Years of Independence celebration. He emphasised the university’s commitment to helping the state government drive economic growth in both Sarawak and Malaysia.

“UNIMAS assists in various initiatives, including digitalisation, food security, and climate change as outlined in the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.

“Sixty years of Sarawak Independence witnessed positive changes in the development of the economy and infrastructure in the state, for example; the children of Sarawak can travel smoothly with the construction of Pan Borneo Highway, the journey becomes shorter and more comfortable.

“All the blessings of convenience, progress that we feel are the result of development that was experienced earlier and maintained until now.”

He urged all campus residents to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to promote racial harmony and respect for the well-being of the state and nation.

Additionally, the vice-chancellor of UNIMAS also participated in the flag-off of the Sarawak Merdeka Adventure Race 2023, aimed at fostering love and patriotism among UNIMAS citizens.

The commemoration of Sarawak’s 60th Anniversary of Independence at the UNIMAS level was further highlighted by the formation of a figure depicting the number 60, created by the talented kayak athletes of UNIMAS. This symbolic gesture represents the enduring journey of the Land of the Hornbill, which has successfully and confidently thrived for six decades of self-governance. Sarawak embodies prosperity!
