MUKAH: Unity and harmony are among the important factors that determine the future and direction of the state, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He highlighted that with a united front, development programmes could proceed systematically and in alignment with established plans.

“At the same time, we need to thank Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and state leaders who have stood out in driving development initiatives.

“Because of that, we are able to witness various new developments that exist under their leadership,” he said when met by reporters after flagging off the Unity Walk and Ride event at Dataran Pehin Setia Raja here yesterday (August 31).

Uggah went on to emphasise the remarkable unity among Sarawakians despite the challenges they faced in the course of the state’s 60-year independence journey.

“This National Day is the right time to thank the previous leaders who fought for independence.

“Under his leadership, the Premier has strengthened the bonds of brotherhood among the people.

“We also need to express our appreciation to the leaders, especially in continuing the rapid development in Sarawak,” he said.

Conveying the collective aspiration for a future that surpassed the objectives outlined in the Post-COVID 19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Uggah shared that state’s poverty rate had dropped slightly compared to before.

Furthermore, he highlighted that there had been tangible progress in terms of infrastructure, quality of life and welfare such as education, agriculture and health.

At the same time, he issued a reminder, urging citizens to continue uniting and collaborating, transcending differences in race and religion.

The Unity Walk and Ride event garnered enthusiastic participation from residents, drawing a crowd of over 1,200 attendees.

The event featured 200 cyclists and 600 walkers divided into 26 contingents, with the cycling segment covering a distance of 6.6 kilometres around Mukah, and the walking route spanned 3.3 kilometres.
