KUCHING: Muslims in the state have been called upon to remain united to ensure progress of the ummah (community).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that when disunity is not dealt with seriously, it could lead to destruction of the ummah and the country.

“If disunity continues to go on, it will only harm the Muslim community and results in major catastrophes such as disagreements, arguments, disputes and wars.”

He said this in a text of speech which was read by the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the state-level Multaqa Murabbi Ummah (MMU) 2022 programme held at Darul Hana Mosque on Tuesday.

Abang Johari advised that differences of opinion should be resolved in a prudent and ethical manner.

“Any disunity can be overcome when we go back to the most basic teachings in the al-Quran and al-Sunnah. As a whole, the Quran highlights the spirit of unity,” he said.

“It is a responsibility of every religious teacher in Sarawak to educate the community to continue to be religiously literate so that their daily practices are guided by teaching of Islam.

“Hence, this Multaqa Murabbi Ummah programme can be used as a medium of introduction and unification for all religious teachers in the state,” he said.

The Premier also expressed his appreciation to the federal government which has contributed a lot to the Islamic affairs by providing an allocation of RM51,074,949 for the development of the Muslim community and the establishment of mosques in Sarawak.

Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad.
