KUCHING: The ‘perahu tambang’ boats operating around Kuching Waterfront are set to undergo a transformative upgrade through a project initiated by the Sarawak government.

Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project aims to give the boats a fresh and culturally rich appearance, contributing to the enhancement of the state’s tourism industry.

“As part of the state government’s perahu tambang facelift project, these boats will be adorned with ethnic motifs representing various communities in Sarawak, complemented by the installation of solar lights.

“This will undoubtedly become a captivating attraction for visitors at the Waterfront,” he said during the River Safety and Cleanliness Campaign, along with the equipment presentation ceremony for project participants held here today (Dec 13).

Deputy Minister for Transport (Marine and Riverine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep delivered Lee’s speech at the event.

Lee further disclosed that all 22 perahu tambang operators involved in the project have received licences, River Transport Permits, and insurance coverage.

Henry, representing Lee, distributed equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits to the participating boat operators.

The two-phase project, with a total expenditure of RM710,000, covers licensing processes, river transport permits, insurance, and safety equipment.

Lee suggested the establishment of an official association for perahu tambang operators to facilitate the government’s distribution of assistance.

“With the formation of this association, the distribution of any form of contribution and aid, both from the Sarawak government and private agencies, will be more efficient.”

The event was attended by Sarawak Rivers Board chairman Dr Murni Suhaili, Malaysian Maritime Department Sarawak director Marzuki Ibrahim, and Kuching North City Hall director Mohamed Khaidir Abang.
