KUCHING: Sarawakians are urged to continue taking precautions as much as possible, including wearing face masks in crowded places, as the nation is presently dealing with a small wave of COVID-19 Omicron XBB sub-variant cases.

According to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, these preventive steps are essential because the virus is still active.

“Please wear your face mask when in crowds, especially during the upcoming general election,” said the deputy premier.

He added although Sarawak has been monitoring new COVID-19 cases every day, the general public must still heed the Ministry of Health’s recommendations to stay away from the virus.

“It is crucial to maintain being attentive because we can never be sure how serious this new variant is,” he said during his walkabout after launching the Borneo Occupational Safety and Health Conference and Exhibition (BOSH 2022) at the Pullman Hotel here today (Nov 1).

Meanwhile, caretaker Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday stated that Malaysia is currently facing a small wave of COVID-19 cases, following the discovery of the Omicron XBB sub-variant in the country.

Based on the current situation, Khairy pointed out that face mask usage is highly recommended, though it remains voluntary.

“It is just a friendly reminder to Malaysians that yes, we are on an uptrend right now, so let’s continue to be careful,” he stressed.
