KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) believes the people will be able to determine which party will be able to deliver when it comes to fighting for the rights of Sarawak come the 15th general election (GE15).

“As far as I am concerned, I do my work with sincerity and maintain the best track record for the people. This is my principle in politics.

“Plus, now not only individuals are jumping from one political party to another, the whole party also jumps, but soon there will be the Anti-Party Hopping Bill to prevent this,” party president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said.

Dr Sim, who is also the Deputy Premier said as for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as a whole, the most important thing was to continue to serve the people and bring development to Sarawak.

“Since 2018, we are the only coalition (GPS) which is politically independent from Malayan political parties.

“And, we have 31 seats out of the 222 seats in Parliament, but it’s still not enough, thus we need to be strong and united to fight for Sarawak rights.

“Having said that, we are grateful that Sabah and Sarawak are able to reclaim some of their rights as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA 63). And we must continue to demand what has been agreed upon – health and education matters, as well as financial resources,” he said after switching on the decorative lights at the famed cat statue in conjunction with Wesak Day 2022 at Jalan Padungan, here on Monday (May 9).

He was commenting on the impending memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) to avoid overlapping claims on seats in GE15.

Dr Sim said the people had learned a lesson from GE14 in 2018, where some politicians had reneged on their pledges to fight for Sarawak rights.

“Therefore, in order for Sarawak to protect its rights and people, one third of the MPs must be from Sabah and Sarawak and our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has also stressed this matter.

“So, it is important for the people of Sarawak to unite to fight for their rights and I hope Sarawak can display strong solidarity like we did against COVID-19. That same spirit should be carried forward to GE15,” he said.

He said Sarawak could not afford to be weak if it wished to regain its recourses and power.
