NOT many are aware of the story behind the respected political figure currently bearing the responsibility as the eighth Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Despite his prominent name in the political arena, this humble individual, born in Sadong Jaya, remains down-to-earth.

In a casual interview with Suara Sarawak, conducted during a stroll in the bustling Kubah Ria Kuching wet market, Wan Junaidi treated us to a meal at a cafe in Satok.

He generously shared aspects of his life journey, revealing a side that doesn’t portray him as a well-known national figure. Those acquainted with him through the media find it unsurprising that he responds to messages warmly, is easygoing, and converses without formalities.

For the locals in Kuching, spotting him having breakfast at the roadside Cafe Yong Hua in Satok is not an extraordinary occurrence; it’s his preferred spot, away from the five-star hotels. Here, he enjoys chatting about various topics with friends and acquaintances.

The community in Kuching is accustomed to seeing Wan Junaidi having breakfast at Yong Hua Satok Cafe.

Additionally, Wan Junaidi spends his weekends, especially Sunday mornings, buying vegetables, fruits, and seafood at the Satok Market alongside his wife and children. He appears relaxed, selecting fish and vegetables for their meal.

In this brief encounter, he expressed no hesitation in discussing his life during his political career, retirement, and return to politics.

Like any other person, he has experienced challenging losses, such as the passing of his beloved wife, Datin Seri Fiona Norjanah Sim Abdullah, in May 2022, coinciding with his retirement as a Member of Parliament after serving for 32 years.

However, as someone who has navigated through life’s bitter experiences, he continued to move forward.

In December 2022, he remarried, namely, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, a 45-year-old woman in Kuala Lumpur.

Shortly after, Wan Junaidi was honoured with the prestigious Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) title, conferring the title Tan Sri, on the occasion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday on June 5, 2023.

And on June 19, 2023, he was elected as the 19th President of the Senate, succeeding Tan Sri Rais Yatim, who had completed his term.

Wan Junaidi expressed his gratitude for the unexpected blessings in the previous year, encompassing his marriage, the prestigious title of Tan Sri, and his appointment as the 19th President of the Senate.

His busy schedule is anticipated to continue, including his routine of reading and responding to messages after waking up for prayers. He frequently revisits the Federal Constitution, often carrying it wherever he goes. His knowledge and interpretation of the law are highly respected, evident in his previous role as the minister responsible for Legal Affairs.

Wan Junaidi’s appointment as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri for a four-year term from January 26, 2024, to January 26, 2028, is a historic chapter for Sarawak, given his extensive and distinguished experience.

The Yang di-Pertua Negeri serves as the head of state in four states and territories in Malaysia without royal institutions: Melaka, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, and Sarawak.
