KUCHING: Sarawak will stand to benefit if Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the president of the Dewan Negara, is appointed the eighth Sarawak governor as speculated.

Geostrategist and political analyst from the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, Prof Dr Azmi Hassan said Wan Junaidi’s profound understanding of parliamentary responsibilities could bring significant benefits to Sarawak and the nation.

“If the speculation holds true, I believe it would be advantageous for Sarawak and, by extension, Malaysia.

“Wan Junaidi, in his role as a parliamentarian and representative of the people, consistently upheld principles of truth and justice.

“Therefore, as the potential governor of Sarawak, he will serve as a commendable example not only for Sarawakians but for all Malaysians,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

He recalled meeting with Wan Junaidi on Friday morning (Jan 19), coinciding with Wan Junaidi’s discussion on the political landscape in Malaysia, specifically addressing the Anti-Party Hopping Act.

“I hope the rumour is true. When he was introduced as the president of Dewan Negara, he did not say anything. Maybe he has not tendered his resignation at the time, or this is just a rumour,” he said.

James Chin

Meanwhile, political analyst Professor James Chin weighed in on the speculation, noting that it does not come as a surprise given the current Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s health condition and the approaching end of his term.

“He is somebody with wide experience, someone who grew up with Sarawak and understands Sarawak. With this, I don’t think there will be any problem with him being nominated as the governor.

“The sooner they do it, the better it is because we the state needs continuity; it is a very important position for Sarawak,” he added.
