KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) might not be fielding Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to defend his Santubong parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

According to FMT, the four-term MP had requested to step down and proposed his political secretary Datuk Seri Syed Hamzah Syed Paie as the candidate.

A party source told the news portal that Incumbent Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has also been tipped to contest for Santubong – as she is to develop the constituency into a leading tourist destination.

However, GPS chairman cum PBB president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will have the final say on who will be field to contest under GPS ticket in the GE15.

It is widely speculated that PBB members will recommend the party leadership to propose in making Wan Junaidi a senator instead so he can be included in the next cabinet if the caretaker minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) decided not to contest in the upcoming general election.
