SIBU: Women bureaus are a useful institution for women in longhouses as a platform to sow and nurture the seed of cohesiveness, strong ties and cooperation among them.

Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat said they are the most appropriate mediums for the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

And this can contribute towards a better standard of living, he said when representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah to officiate at the formation of a Biro Wanita at RH. Simon Bonifis in Babu Delit, here today.

Chuat said that nowadays such bureaus were very active in preserving and promoting cultural skills.

“We have now seen the resurgence of interest in traditional weaving, embroidery, cake or biscuit making, and the Ngajat classes.

“These are very positive developments and should be continued. We will do our part to offer the assistance needed,” he said.

Chuat also revealed that there is currently a women’s bureau each in all 94 longhouses in the Bukit Saban constituency.

Meanwhile, on politics, he said Sarawak was a very stable state now under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration.

“Our people are appreciating and have very high confidence in the good government under GPS. That why they had chosen to support 76 of its candidates in the last state election.

“Our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is looking forward to the same support and confidence in the GPS in the parliamentary election expected anytime.

“GPS is hopeful of winning 28 of the 31 seats to be contested. I hope our voters will give us their fullest mandate.

“A very strong mandate from the people will put the GPS government in a better position to continue struggling to restore eroded rights under the MA63,” he said.

Also present were the political secretary to the Premier Dr Richard Rapu and representatives from 28 women bureaus from longhouses in the vicinity.
