KUCHING: Sarawak is currently inviting interested foreign direct investors globally to invest in the field of hydrogen energy in the state.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said two companies from Korea and Japan had confirmed their plans to set up their hydrogen plants here.

In fact, he said, there is another foreign investor company from Korea that has expressed its intention to be involved in the same field.

“Hydrogen is the future source of energy and Sarawak is on the right track in its efforts towards that direction.

“Therefore, we are inviting foreign investor companies to establish their (hydrogen) factories here which will bring benefits to both parties,” he said.

Dr Hazland said this to reporters at a press conference after officiating at the 18th International Conference of Clean Energy (ICCE) 2022 held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), today.

On hydrogen, he also noted that hydrogen energy is a harmless source of energy.

Dr Hazland  said  he was aware of the public’s  scepticism  about the use of hydrogen, adding, however, that  this particular  source of energy was safe to use.

“What is actually dangerous is the hydrogen bomb because it has been mixed with other chemicals and it is different from hydrogen. Therefore, it (hydrogen) is safe,” he said.

Dr Hazland  added that the energy density of hydrogen is three to five times stronger than petrol and diesel.
