KUCHING: Sarawak’s young DanceSport athletes have made their presence felt on the international stage.

Valery Chung, Erin Ung, and Arabelle Leah Pei, showcased determination and potential as they secured an impressive haul of five gold medals and one bronze in the Juvenile and Junior Latin category events of the Cebu WDSF Open DanceSport Championship 2023.

The competition, which took place at the Cebu Waterfront City Hotel in the Philippines, on Sept 30, saw the Malaysian flag flying high.

“The star of the Sarawak team was eleven-year-old Valery, a student of SJK Chung Hua 4, who displayed dance skills that defied her age,” a statement said yesterday.

She swept the competition with four gold medals in Juvenile C, Solo Samba, Cha Cha Cha, and Jive, outshining over 40 fellow competitors in the Juvenile Latin category.

As for the Junior category, Erin, a twelve-year-old student of Tunku Putra-HELP, and Arabelle, a student of St. Joseph’s Private School, joined forces to claim gold in the Junior C Duo event, competing against 50 talented rivals.

Cindy said these achievements would serve as motivation for the team to continue working hard in the future.

She also extended her gratitude to the Sarawak State Sports Council and Sarawak DanceSport Association for their unwavering support.

The next event on the horizon for this talented team will be the Sabah DanceSport Championship, scheduled for November.
