SIBU: A 22-year-old man placed under police surveillance with an electronic monitoring device (EMD) will now spend the next 15 months in prison for removing the device.

Albert Welson who told police on June 10 that someone had stolen the device was arrested after police did not buy his story.

In court today (June 15) Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar handed him the lengthy prison term for violating the Prevention of Crime Act 1959.

He also ordered Albert of Jalan Sibu Jaya to pay RM1,500 for the loss of the EMD set, failing which he has to serve two months’ jail in default.

Prosecuting officer ASP Linggi Tawi told the court that police had arrested Albert for removing of the EMD.

He said Albert had failed to provide a reasonable explanation as to the whereabouts of the EMD.
