SIBU: A total of 100 logs were seized in two separate operations in Kanowit by enforcement teams from Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

SFC, in a statement yesterday, said upon receiving information on Wednesday its enforcement team from SFC Sibu Regional Office was dispatched to a location at Sengayan, Nibong/Tada Road in Kanowit.

“The team discovered 62 logs with an estimated total volume of 24 cubic metres (m3) at the roadside. The logs comprising various sizes and tree species are believed to be from illegal logging at the forest nearby. None of the logs bear any official markings and were subsequently detained upon confirming that no licence to extract timber has been issued at the area,” the statement said.

The corporation said a joint operation between its Sibu Regional Office and the Forestry Department was carried out at the riverbank of Sungai Poi, Kanowit, last Sunday and a total 38 logs of various sizes and species were seized in the operation.

“The location where the logs were found is near a licence area. However, none of the logs bore any official markings. An abandoned make-shift shelter believed to have been used in this illegal operation was also found during the raid.

“Both cases have been reported to the nearest police station and the seized logs have been handed over to the relevant authority for further investigation and disposal,” it said.
