KUCHING: The Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) talent development programme received a big boost with over 100 students from all over the schools here took part in a shooting competition held at the shooting range at Petra Jaya last Saturday.

Sixty-three of them were registered in the shootout in the air rifle, air pistol and 50m prone under the watchful eyes of a panel of coaches, including Leong Wai Si from Perak and Korean coach Hwang Ikkwon.

MSNS sports coordinator for shooting, Christina Janggui said they were registered in the competition which was held to pick talents for future competitions.

“It is the first competition of its kind and the response is overwhelming as over 100 students turned up. Our programme to reach out to the schools started in October last year with 22 public schools from the Kuching Division,” she said.

“As a follow-up, there will be another competition on Jan 26 for the private schools such as Tunku Putra and Lodge schools to take part.

“We plan to hold such competitions every month as part of the development programme as well as to select a group of shooters between the ages of 12 to 17,” added Christina.

She said a keen rivalry was seen during the competition with some new entries doing better than some of the more senior trainees.

The MSNS official said the state is planning to send a team of shooters to a competition in Subang, Kuala Lumpur sometime in April.
