SARIKEI: The Sarikei District Council (MDS) has taken an initiative to organise a gotong-royong programme to clean the areas of Taman Sebangkoi due to concerns on the spread of dengue last Thursday.

The programme was organised with the Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department and Sarikei Bicycle Club.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue chief Mahmudin Zainuddin revealed that the programme attracted 100 volunteers from the department, district council and the club.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the programme as it is a community programme.

“The reception has been encouraging. All of the participants helped to clear trash from the area including from bushes and drains.

Mahmudin also thanked the local authorities for their cooperation in assisting to clean the recreation centre.

“Taman Sebangkoi is a popular destination especially during the holidays as it is famous for its natural beauty.

“The effort to clean the area has to be done to combat the spread of dengue as it is a local attraction that people often visit.
